I finally got a Zeiss projector! Sadly not one of those - but a little 35mm slide projector but it is still a Zeiss! There are a lot of them about on e-bay -I paid £25. Have to admit - not sure why they still cost a reasonable amount of money surely the demand has plummeted in recent years. This model is a bit plasticy. I am guessing it is from the 1980s but it will grace the 'entrance lobby' (or rather the small area at the top of the ladder) of my attic planetarium this year.

When you think about the number of slides that are inherited down as the older generation passes, the only way to review this family history is with a projector. The family one has probably reached the point of non operation or at least a burned out bulb, many of which are hard to find. Easier to just get a working old stock machine.

A few years ago I bought a little Aldis projector for the attic planetarium. I chose the Aldis mainly on the basis that it was very similar to one that Pink Floyd used in the late 60s (piccy has extract from book). I thought it looked cool but it is a different model.

Here is a comparison of a slide of the Orion nebula projected by the Zeiss vs the Aldis (a competition reminiscent of some of Sir Gare's early podcasts). The photos don't quite do it justice - the Zeiss photo is overexposed but in reality the Zeiss one really 'pops' and is far better. It might be because I replaced the original projection bulb in the Aldis (which itself was a work of art) so it is not really a fair comparison.

Minor trivia - the orion slide is from a set from the Armagh Planetarium which used to have the same Minolta planetarium as Ron before selling it to the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester where it is still going strong.

I would expect the Zeiss image to look better as the lens is what Zeiss is famous for. I used Zeiss Superspeed lenses for my film work (T1.2) and they were better then anything else I ever shot with. I must get on with building some new micro projectors so I can project larger images of things like the Orion nebula right where they are in the sky.
