Watch out for copyright. All articles after 1977 are copyright and those published between 1922 and 1977 are in question. Before 1922 your clear to copy. Otherwise you need to get clearance to reprint them.

Is there anywhere the articles can actually be read? It would be interesting to peruse them.

It would be interesting to peruse them. actually ive decided to wait and look into this copyright thing a little more, i would prefer to put the actual articles in the book, and the pictures too. i can miss the birthday, who cares you know? you saw the articles on facebook, or pieces of them, i was hoping other people would send more info, i did hear from one guy but nothing committed yet. any chance you can dig up anymore names from the old oc hoard? no where else to go already on the podcast, paused it.

I hope you sort the copyright thing out - presumably the audience will be very niche so the chances of anyone getting really upset about reproducing articles are extremely limited. I am sure I have seen disclaimers along the lines of 'efforts have been made to obtain permission, please contact author/publisher if there is a problem'. But I guess there remains a tiny residual risk.
In any case - put me down for a pre-order. I would LOVE to read this book.

I know with a book you can quote several pages under the "for review and educational purposes" loophole. There is some useful information here: www.scribbr.com/citing-sources/cite-a-newspaper-article/The most obvious question is, is the article available to the general public on the web or on microfilm or in the stacks. Safe way would be to get permission from the writer or if it says "staff" then from the newspaper. If the writer is no longer with the newspaper then the copyright remains with the newspaper. I cannot believe that small newspapers would forbid your use as long as you give a credit line. You might also be able to access the original photos so the reproduction of dots from printing don't destroy the image quality. Oh, don't forget, copyright clearance from the photographer as well.

Or perhaps place them in a bibliography as support info for a chapter in the book but print out the entire article. Or make a Xerox of each article and staple them together and not available to the general public.

Please remember that I am just speaking out loud and am certainly not a lawyer so none of my suggestions should be taken as literal and/or lawful answers to your questions.

Thanks for the info, I just decided to put the book out in summary form for now, I wanted to thank Linda for the help while the iron was hot. There are many conflicting versions of how these copyrights work, too much work to sort out. I would probably have to consult a lawyer to be sure!
