Just got back from a family trip to France - I persuaded my son and his girlfriend to squeeze in a trip to the musee de l'air et de l'espace in Paris (was quite a long trip by train, metro and bus) - but that is what I call a museum! They have an Ariane 5 on the tarmac and loads of aeroplanes (including a zeppelin gondola) but the main attraction was their planetarium. They run a Zeiss Skymaster ZKP3/b. I have never seen one in the flesh before. It was such beautiful thing and so great to see a proper projector sitting in rightful place in the centre of the dome. We sat right in the middle so we could really watch the projector close up. The projected sky was really sharp and I loved being able to see the silhouette of the dumbell. The dome was 2/3 full mainly with youngish kids but the dome had that amazing hushing effect. I was really impressed by the near silent operation of the motors in the projector. The presentation was live and although it was in French I kinda got the general gist of it (summer constellations). From our stuttering attempts at the ticket booth the ticketing staff had very politely pointed out that we probably would not understand too much and asked if we were really sure we wanted tickets. It was great.

The stars of the show are the...well, stars, as well as the projector. One needs not understand what the person behind the counter says when they have a beautiful projector to look at.
