Always worth reviewing and reading anything about classic old projectors and equipment, I am excited to announce the publishing of The Pacific Planetarium Association's magazine, "The Pointer". It even has some "build your own projector" stuff which I always enjoy. Well worth perusing. www.ppadomes.org/pubs/the-pointer

These are little gems - especially the Richard O Norton article. I have always found it hard to find simple information about condenser lenses. These have always been a bit of a problem for me in my home made bits and pieces. I naturally focus on the 'glamorous' parts of the projector i.e. star plates and projection lenses with the condensers bring the poor relation.

Richard Norton has always been a wealth of information. His book "The Planetarium and Atmospherium an Indoor Universe" is full of information on how projectors work. On page 106 we find that exact same illustration as to how an optical system works. If you want to save room you can use a Fresnel lens which is basically flat and thin.
