Not a strange hobby but in between planetarium building I have been restoring an old land rover. It was mostly rust and oil when I bought it but slowly and surely it has come back to life.

It is back on the road now and can reach speeds in excess of 40mph!

What kind of mileage does it get?

If you mean how many miles do I cover - it is only insured for 3000 miles per year but I haven't got anywhere near that figure because a) it has needed so much work and is off the road more than on it and b) it is extraordinarily primitive, fumy, loud and uncomfortable. It is an ex-army Series 3 from 1980 with leaf suspension and absolutely NO creature comforts whatsoever.
If you mean how many miles per gallon - at best about 20 or so (usually less)- which is another reason for not doing too many miles.
Having said that it is brilliant fun to drive, and can go properly off-road + you can obviously take the cloth top off on a sunny day. People just come and talk to you when you fill it with fuel or park up.
They are a bit of an institution this side of the pond - originally copied/ adapted from the US army Willys Jeep after the war. Supposedly all you need to repair it is a set of imperial spanners. It still has an old fashioned crank handle for starting it when the battery is flat.

Actually 20mpg is not bad for a device like that. I also like the idea that you can insure your vehicle for a set number of miles. I wish I could do that over here.
