Posted by: albert Apr 4 2009, 02:12 AM I am posting here some pictures of old stage effects projectors. They might serve as an inspiration to build projection effects from scratch. The most interesting of these is a multiple projector cloud effect. The whole thing revolved so I suppose it already used slip rings and the like. As early as 1929!

Posted by: albert Apr 4 2009, 02:23 AM A big 1000 Watt projection lantern I use on the stage. This projects "slides" as big as a CD cover - 12 x 12 cms. We use it for out of focus "gobo" projection. The light coming thru trees in a forest is a good example. I had good results by either handpainting the slides or by using slides printed onto transparent cels with an inkjet printer. Since the aperture is so large there is very little heat. Havin a bright light source for these effects is very helpful on the stage. The water projector above could be directly hooked up to the lantern. In case you are wondering: The white tape in front of the lens serves to blend edges with another projector coming from the other side of the stage. It serves as a softedge blend to smooth the effect across the background cyc.

Posted by: albert Apr 4 2009, 02:28 AM The Munich-made "dedolight" is a very clever light. 12 Volt lamp, it has a complete lens-condenser system and can be focused to an extremely narrow beam. It has a projection attachment that can take slides up to 6 x 6 cm. The projection attachment has another lens in the back and takes slide projector lenses. I use it to project an out of focus "moon" on the stage. I simply took a large washer and used the central hole with a yellowish gel to get a perfectly circular hole for my "slide"....

Posted by: albert Apr 4 2009, 02:34 AM If you want to see more stage effects go to this page www.gerriets.de/de/unternehmen/museum_buehnenbeleuchtung.phpIt has a 2 MB download of vintage lights, lighting equipment and at the end is a section on revolving disc projectors. In German but the images might be interesting to you. Enjoy!

Wow, I'm starting to think special effects again, and just saw this, a week after Prof. Fantastic posted a picture of the same projector!

Posted by: Owen Phairis Dec 3 2009, 06:19 PM In one of my sheds I have a nice follow spotlight that I bought at a yard sale for $ 15.00. My plan was always to replace the lamp with a strobe light and put in a mask of a lightning bolt. That way I could use it for my lighning stage show, and synchonize the thunder to it.
One more fun project to work on...
Owen -
Mine is very similar to this one, perhaps an Altman?

Posted by: Ron Walker Jan 3 2019, 11:12 AM Any kind of projector adds to the visual experience. A simple slide projector can be replaced with a small hand held video projector and accomplish the same effect for a lot more money. You can add motion via these new projectors by simply adding a different type of stored file in a computer or via a video disc. Having one of these moving on a planetarium projector can add to the complexity and expense. No, the KISS way of doing things will solve a lot of problems before they even start.
