Posted by: Ron Walker Jan 26 2012, 06:02 PM After the first day we are down about a foot on the far side. Another foot and we will be very close. Another friendly neighbor is lending me a transit and looking for a good deal on a backhoe which will be used to dig the foundation trench. Tomorrow we will probably move some of the huge pile of dirt out of the way and then start building another pile. Vince, my other neighbor with the transit believes I'll be pouring the foundation concrete by the end of next week. I thought that wouldn't happen until at least March. This might actually get done. It's hard to believe but dreaming big really does pay off.

Chicago was like that except there was more sleet and snow then rain. What was really depressing is that it got dark around three in the afternoon and it didn't really get very light before ten in the morning. There is a slight overcast today but the temp should get to around 75 degrees. I've found that I can put up with the hot summers as long as this part of the year stays constant. Total rainfall for the year averages about sixteen inches, most during the summer monsoons. They usually start in July.
This is one of the reasons why I wanted to get the major part of the building up while the weather was nice. Doing anything outside during the day in summer is not for the weak of heart.

Well for accuracy sake it should be just as miserable as the real summer night. However, as I get older I really like my creature comforts. I do plan on adding air conditioning at some point. All of the money spent getting the permit has come from the back end. If nothing else there will be some window size units in the wall eventually. We will see.

The main scope will be a Orion 11" XLT EQ-G. I am also going to add a PST for viewing the Sun.

I would like to be able to project the Sun, Moon, and planets (basically Jupiter and Saturn). Hopefully the Sun will work better for a camera then my eye as age has made seeing harder for me. I'm not at all sure which imager I will end up with but there is no budget for a really expensive unit. I do have a small Orion StarShot Solar System Color Imaging Camera II. It is fairly inexpensive and has made good images of the Moon. So far I haven't really done a lot of work with it as the OB and planetarium are still some time from completion. I'm not at all sure if it will work directly with the PST as I've heard that it can't be focused properly. Adding a small barlow might shift the focal plane enough but that is experimentation for another time.

Posted by: Ron Walker Jan 31 2012, 12:26 PM There is so much dirt to move that I had to learn how to run the tractor so we could use two to get the job done. Here I am dumping a load (of dirt that is).

Posted by: moonmagic Jan 31 2012, 12:54 PM Ron- EVERYONE should have one of those...even if you really don't need it. Most recently when I rented a backhoe for the day, I had more fun with it than should be allowed.
If you start driving toward me now, you should get here in time to help with the Spring vegetable garden. March 1st will be fine for me. mm

Yes, they are fun and I'm sure that I would find more projects to do if I had one. Actually I'm glad to have a good friend that has several as the amount of money saved I'm sure will be several thousand by the time I'm finished. Having good friends with toys is the only way I could ever afford to build this dream. It would probably cost at least two to three times the amount without the help.
Kind of makes me wonder where I'll be the first of each month.

Posted by: moonmagic Feb 1 2012, 03:41 PM This is no doubt about that...it is saving you a whole bunch of dollars, and it is good that you have some extra help too. Normally it works that way with good neighbors and friends. You help them when they have a big project and they return the favor when you are working on one. Your weather there seems to have held for a while.
What kind of lead time does the company require before you will get your "kit" sections?
Don't forget to pace yourself. I sometimes make the mistake of thinking that I am still 30 years old only to pay the price in the number of days I need for recovery. This is even more pronounced as I carry around another human being with me at all times...now mind you I'm not overweight, but the other guy on my shoulders is quite a porker! {Small planets are beginning to orbit here...} mm
