Posted by: Ron Walker Sep 9 2018, 08:30 PM QUOTE(mrgare5050 @ Sep 9 2018, 03:23 PM) * I want to make sure I only run one at a time so I dont have to ask people where they saw it, that was one mistake i made with all those bulletin boards. Getting into the entire Nashville Metro area will add considerable travel time for people, although I have no idea where these new show people are coming from either. One good thing, nobody needs directions anymore!
It's looking like you will have more visitors this month then I will. Nobody for the two shows offered this weekend and the special show for the DFAC club was cancelled because no one signed up. Kind of ticked off the president because he had a couple of new members who specifically requested to see a show. I kind of look at it and say, oh well, now I don't have to cool the place. I hope I'm not getting board with the whole thing. Perhaps it's just meant to be a bad year. This is where I need MM to come in and cheer me up as I have no sign ups for the rest of the month either.
To keep me happy I've started a new group for movie day. It happens on the second Tuesday of each month. It is limited to ten people so each one has a seat and has developed a waiting list. If anyone misses three months in a row their seat is offered to the next one in line. Whoever shows up for a show gets to pick the next months offering. It started last month with the road show presentation of "Lawrence Of Arabia" which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. This week it is the restored version of "Once Upon A Time In The West" one of the best westerns ever made.
(Another two buck Chuck bites the dust.)
My wife and eldest daughter are off in Oklahoma for a mini horse show, my youngest daughter is dog and house sitting for our best friends who are off to Florida to bury their youngest son killed in a car accident, my next door neighbor just had her golden retriever put down with deteriorating hips after twelve years, and I'm sitting here looking at an empty bottle of Cabernet knowing exactly how Philostopher1 feels a lot of the time (you have my love). I need to watch a movie to get me out of this funk. How about Titanic in 3D.

I'm surprised you have never heard of this film. "Once Upon A Time In The West" is a homage to the American western by Sergio Leone who among other films directed "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". It was the only "Spaghetti western that was shot in John Ford's main filming location, Monument Valley in Arizona and Utah. Best to see the original road show presentation which runs 166 minutes. This 1968 film stars Henry Fonda (as the bad guy!) as well as Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, Claudia Cardinale, Gabriele Ferzetti, Woody Strode, Jack Elam, Lionel Stander, Paolo Stoppa, Frank Wolff, and Keenan Wynn. While some of these names might sound unfamiliar to us, they are before the title names in Europe like Henry Fonda was/is here.
Fonda who always plays the good guy is especially good in this as the bad guy. He just really enjoys the role and plays it extremely well. I also think it the best performance Robards ever gave.
If you never saw it I would highly recommend it if you enjoy westerns at all.

After Clint Eastwood turned down an offer to play the movie's protagonist, Bronson was offered the role.
AHA .. I wondered where he was ....
it says the score is as haunting as Good Bad Ugly ...

Posted by: Ron Walker Apr 8 2019, 01:47 PM OK, so Andy, about fifty miles away from me in Apache Junction, said there were a lot of snowbird groups out there that were looking for things to do. So a cheap and effective handout might just generate some more interest like the magazine article did. I did a three to a page two sided piece that works well in B&W and sent off the files to him.
This is then cut into three handouts and then placed at the desired location. Andy did so and sent back this picture of everything in place.
Now we will see if anyone takes them and if anyone emails. As Andy says, it is late in the season and a lot of the snowbirds are gone for the season. Perhaps it won't be until next fall when the flocks come back that these will generate much interest. As you can see, they are very generic and can be used anytime and anyplace. Perhaps I should have put the Facebook page on there as well but either way they must use a computer to find out more.

Posted by: Ron Walker Apr 8 2019, 03:50 PM Yes, the fact that the magazine article generated so much group interest it was worth the experiment. Then with Andy's comments as to the groups of snowbirds that congregate around Apache Junction, pushed me over the edge to take the time to make the little handout. I notice that a lot of people just put out a business card, but they tend to just blend together and get kind of lost. The third of a piece of paper with the weird picture at the top would tend to catch more eye's I would think. Anyway, it certainly is a cheap experiment (especially with Andy supplying the paper and ink) to see if group interest can be generated.

That is something that I've struggled with for some time. I have tended to keep pictures of the projector out of any handouts because I would rather those that come be somewhat surprised and find more then they expected. Like when you came and found the projector much larger then you expected. There is a psychological shift when people see more then they expect to see and perhaps think my poor show performance not as bad as it is. blink.gif
The next is cost of admission. If I charge a fee then I open up a whole new business with taxes etc.. I don't want to go back to that so I only accept gifts and/or donations at the viewers discretion. They are tax free. If someone sends me an email requesting more information, it contains a line that states, "There is no charge for the shows, there is a "donation jar" for those so inclined." so it is up to the individual. I find it kind of sad that the Arizona Science Center Planetarium Show will cost an individual $27. So a family of four will spend around $100 and that doesn't include popcorn. No wonder no one wants to go to a planetarium show anymore. I've had several young families that have come and put nothing in the jar and that is fine if they enjoyed the show and learned something. That is also one of the good things about retired groups. They tend to gift more.

VERY TRUE! I was floored when I first saw Him live, but I had seen photo's before my visit. And in color too! And I know it's a free show! I'm just saying maybe something like "Admission is FREE but Donations to help with equipment maintenance are Greatly Appreciated" across the bottom front page. Or something like that. It's important for them to know this is not expensive. These people are as tight as they are old! If it's a free showing than that will get them there and your expert presentation will knock their socks off. And make the donation jar very noticeable after the lights come back up!

Posted by: Strgzr Apr 8 2019, 09:10 PM You need to get on this list! (and others) And also exploit the lists! Make it easy for people to find other reasons to drive out to Cave Creek and make a whole day out of it! Renee and I spent half a day there shopping and eating when we came out. So I wouldn't be surprised if the chamber of commerce or somebody wouldn't be obliging to you. www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g31187-Activities-Cave_Creek_Arizona.htmlDo you know you have PHALLIC ROCK (I believe the real name rhymes) right by you in Carefree? I'm going to have to drive over again soon and check THAT out! And grab some Mexican food! And of course catch another presentation as well! wink.gif

Perhaps I should have a light come on under the gift jar at the end of the show so it stands out more. I do have my sign up list conveniently placed just in front of the jar so it is seen without me making note of it.
Another reason for not mentioning any form of money is no one really knows who will pick up a flyer and there are a lot of people that work for all levels of government. I don't want to open any can of worms. If people are truly interested they will ask the question about "ticket cost" (I have had enough questions to know this) and I send them my introductory letter filled with "boiler plate" and answers to the most often asked questions.
Who knows what the future will bring, but for now I want to keep this low key. Being in a residential neighborhood I must tread lightly. I do find it interesting that with my plot of ground being the size it is I am allowed to operate a "museum" so that alone has probably protected me from any "busybody" type interference. So for me it is slow going and one small step at a time.

A lot of these things I've thought about but I'm not as yet ready to take that step. Again I'm walking a fine line and I don't want to piss off the neighbors. I would imagine that if I managed to get on one of these lists, I would need to offer shows on a somewhat permanent bases. Then sit around to see if anyone shows up. Since I really don't want this to become a job and lock up my time I'm hesitant to go this route. I think I will check with the lady that runs Grace's museum of Americana to see how she keeps things straight. Also the local Chamber was very interested in me leaving a handout and now that it's done I might check into that.
I have yet to see "Phallic Rock", is that the best Carefree can do?
