Hi all.
I'm hoping to build a 20 foot diameter dome. It's unlikely that I could afford perforated aluminum panels (for acoustic transparency) and so will use some more affordable material. However, I'm concerned about using a material that is highly acoustically reflective.
Those with DIY domes, could you kindly note the material used and how acoustically reflective/absorbtive it is as a finished dome.
In advance, thanks for your consideration.

I too was somewhat terrified of sound reflections in my dome as it was all drywall with plaster built up. And indeed it was bad until I placed a small loop 1/4" carpet on the floor. Surprisingly that knocked out at least 90% of the echoes under the dome. There is still the direct node reflection for two points directly opposite each other but that has never caused a problem. I have one speaker right next to the projector near the center of the dome aimed directly up and everyone can hear me with no difficulty at all.
Albert in Germany made a perfectly round plaster dome with similar experiences. Once he placed carpet on the floor the reflection problem went away. I will look for his old posts and get them up here. Scott has made both a paper dome as well as a foam core dome and has not mentioned any problems with reflections. Perhaps he will comment on this.
All in all if a plaster dome generates little problem then I think you can use most anything. Actually, when you think about it, even a pro dome is more solid then it is holes.
Also welcome to the new OCP.

Hi all - as you might expect, the tissue paper and plywood dome does not seem to reflect sound (or at least I have never noticed it). The foamex/ foam core dome does reflect the sound very noticeably - once a carpet was in and chairs/ people it did not seem to be too much of a problem.

I don't know how I missed these questions. I have a plaster dome and just putting down some thin industrial carpet changed things from an echo chamber to a very useable sonic space. I was going to run the same carpet up the side walls to the spring line but found it unnecessary. Actually I did answer this above. Why O why does this take so long to load?
